Alcohol Statistics: Alcoholism – Alcohol Dependency and Abuse
Drinking in the long term could bring forth a dependency on alcohol. By itself drinking is just one of the run a risk factors that lead to alcoholism. Statistically men are more likely to become addicted than are women. Elements that can contribute to excessive alcohol drinking include genetics, stress, anxiousness, low self esteem, economic crisis and social and cultural factors.
Despite a few benefits of regular but controlled alcohol use, the risks of ill-use are more numerous and damaging. Unreasonable consumption of alcohol is the 6th leading cause of death in United States. Alcohol addiction in itself is one of the most preventable health problems. Research has brought out compelling evidence of the medical dangers from heavy alcohol consumption. Alcohol has little nutritional value and excessive drinking step-ups the risk of some forms of heart disease, obesity, fetal damage, collateral cancer, nutritional deficiencies and many other disorders.

The foetus may be affected by even moderate use of alcohol, depending on the amount, frequency and timing of the mother’s drinking and, in this scenario the brain is the most vulnerable developing organ to ethanol-induced damage. Many children who have been exposed to alcohol during the prenatal period, even though they do not show obvious physical signs, they may show cognitive, motor and behaviour dysfunctions. Nowadays, Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is the term used to define the full range of prenatal alcohol damage varying from mild to severe. The inclusion of a wider terminology dramatically increases the impact of alcohol on public health. Although FASD can be prevented by avoiding alcohol consumption, given the increased incidence of FASD, this film has an …
