?Today?S Family? to Feature Retreat Healthcare

Deerfield Beach, FL (PRWEB) June 12, 2004

Platinum Television Group is pleased to announce the selection of Retreat Healthcare for its innovative, educational television series, TodayÂ?s Family. The segment will deal with Â?Treating Complex Psychiatric Disorders in Women.Â?

The recognition of complex psychiatric disorders, or Â?dual diagnosis,Â? is increasing, whereby substance abuse occurs in combination with depression, anxiety, eating disorders, personality disorders or other mental health problems. Real recovery requires treatment for each critical problem and recognition of how these disorders interact.

According to a report published by the Journal of the American Medical Association: Thirty-seven percent of alcohol abusers and 53 percent of drug abusers also have at least one serious mental illness. Of all people diagnosed as mentally ill, 29 percent abuse either alcohol or drugs. Women experience a particularly high incidence of dual diagnosis, for example, 90 percent of those with eating disorders are women, and a quarter of them also abuse or are dependent on drugs or alcohol. Without treatment, up to 20 percent of people with serious eating disorders die. With treatment, that number falls to just two to three percent.

Retreat Healthcare is a not-for-profit psychiatric hospital founded in 1834 based on the premise that through support, caring and treatment, people can recover from mental illness and addictions.
