Why Should Alcohol Be Legal, but Not Marijuana?

Question by New World Order Rebel: Why should alcohol be legal, but not marijuana?
Just curious, what argument against keeping marijuana illegal, doesn’t also hold true for alcohol?

“Driving stoned could put other people in danger” – so could alcohol.
“Marijuana is bad for you” – so is alcohol, and so are five gazillion other things.
“Think of the children!!!” – I am. I think minors should have to show an ID and prove they are an adult to receive their drugs, rather than just go to Joe at the end of the block.
“Two wrongs don’t make a right.” – But endorsing and tolerating one wrong while detesting a lesser wrong is nothing but hypocrisy.

The truth is, I don’t see one reason that people often use to say marijuana should be illegal, that DOESN’T hold true for alcohol as well. Even though science has proved countless times (I will post sources if asked) that marijuana is less physically damaging than alcohol, people still maintain this goofy position on legalizing the two substances. And even if marijuana was worse, it does not cause as much damage to society as alcohol. People don’t get in bar fights and beat their family members from marijuana. People don’t overdose of asphyxiate on their own vomit from smoking marijuana. And I doubt there is anyone today that will say alcohol should be illegal and not point to Prohibition being a total failure, save for a microscopic minority of authoritarian extremists.

In fact, I CHALLENGE you to give me one legitimate reason that marijuana should be kept illegal, that does also warrant banning alcohol as well. If you can, I’ll give you best answer.
(typo ) that “does not” warrant banning alcohol as well. Sorry
@Vinny: Which is why smoking in public should be illegal, which is already happening for tobacco. Very poor argument.
So noone should be able to smoke in their own home either? And marijuana can be consumed orally too. You don’t have to smoke it.
@rob71: So does sunlight, and the dozens of chemicals they put in your shampoo and soap. But you aren’t complaining about those.
@Andy. So does alcohol. So does television.
@vinny: If you aren’t mature enough to have an intelligent debate about something, then you shouldn’t be on this forum.

People can smoke tobacco inside their house, or deck, without it permeating an entire city. If someone lives out in a rural area, they can smoke marijuana without affecting anyone else. Or they can eat it. I’m done repeating myself.

And I wont be silenced by your stereotypes. I’m not a pothead, but I don’t have to prove it to you.
@Rebop: 1) So private intoxication should be illegal as well?
@Rob71: Lay off the laws
@Repob: 2) You can smoke marijuana and only get a “buzz”, not a high.

3) some people drink just to get drunk. Should that be a crime? Why should your morals be enforced on others?
NoName: I guarantee that almost all who think marijuana should be legalized, want to deny welfare and social services to drug addicts.
@Vinny: Haha Vinny you are hopeless. I never said pot is a harmless wonder drug. It is about individual freedoms. How would you like the government to be your mommy and slap you on the wrist, and say “it’s bad for you” everytime you eat a BigMAc from McDonalds or have a Sunday beer?

And age does not equal maturity. That statement only proves your own. You can’t have a respectful debate without insulting people that disagree with you. That is the ultimate lack of maturity. But don’t worry I give up on you.
@Vinny: ANd you’re just a terrorist. It’s in your responsibility to prove you’re not. Can’t prove you’re not a terrorist? Oh too bad.

LEGALIZE THE HOLY HERB IN 2010!!

  • Vinny:

Because someone drinking a beer sitting next to me wont make me drunk, someone smoking a doobie stting next to me however will immeidately affect my health.

Edit: So someone smoking a joint on his deack with the breeze blowing the smoke over into my home wont affect me? Someone smoking in the car in front of me with the wind blowing it back into my car wont affect me? Ridiculous.

Edit #2: Not mature enough as a 46 year old architect here in Washingtonn DC? Hardly. However, I will have fun watching you applying for job after job that requires drug testing because even if made legal, you wont be hired by anyone who requires your brain to be free of the effects of any psychotropic drugs. Try generating a section modulus after you enjoyed your legalized joint on your lunch break or even later that night. You’ll be fired before the ash goes cold, legal or not.

And by the way, you can tell how young you are because your statement “And I wont be silenced by your stereotypes. I’m not a pothead, but I don’t have to prove it to you.” is incorrect because the burden of proof in this country is the responsibility of the person making the assertion – in this case you – therefore it most definitely IS your responsibility to prove it, which you obviously cant do ; )

Any type of smoking causes cancer.

  • Andy:

Well sonny, I guess becuase marijuana kills the BRAIN.

  • Lois Griffin:

Pot should be legal. It will create jobs and revenue.
We need to get people back to work.

  • Alejandro:

There is good wine and beer without alcohol. So, I say ban alcohol. It’s not needed and it causes drunk drivers.

  • Bibigirl:

One is as dangerous as the other only people didn’t smoke marijuana when these laws were enacted.

  • Reconstructing Melons:

They both should be, … they should be taxed and sold at approved outlets. Take away the criminal element from it and the crime goes away over night.

  • Soylent Green:

Marijuana should be controlled the same as alcohol.

  • No Name:

Because I have noticed that people who get stoned sit their and argue points that are just plain wrong. Their so-called research is usually conducted by people who get stoned. This to me represents damage to the brain. Don’t bother telling me you disagree because I really do not care what stoners think-that is *if* they think.
I do not normally believe dope should be illegal but unfortunately in our society, we have so many welfare and social services that have to pay for stoned fools that inevitably I would wind up paying for your choice to get stoned and the bad health consequences from it. This would no doubt include stoned driving.
Repeal ALL social wefare programs that help stoned people in any way and we will talk more amicably about legalization. And yes, you are right, alcohol is usually bad too and similar treatment should be on drunks.

  • Rebop:

    1) Public intoxication is illegal

    2) It is possible to consume alcohol without becoming intoxicated

    3) The purpose of smoking marijuana is to become intoxicated therefore it is not possible to smoke marijuana without becoming intoxicated therefore smoking marijuana should be illegal

  • Bavarian Thunderbox:

Hemp was initially made illegal because it’s products could compete with oil-based products. It’s about the money, not concern for your well-being.

  • Abe-hicks:

People like John McCain do all they can to keep alcohol legal cause they have made a fortune from it while the kid on the corner can go to prison & McNasty get McHappy over that.
