Yes, I believe that you need to go to college for a few years before becoming a counselor. A doctors degree, was it? Or something of that nature. Forgot…
yes you need school background on the health matter and psycology. experience is good but it is just not enough. it probably not the best analogy, ex criminals do not automatically qualified to be a police. no offense.
No, I’m pretty sure you need Certification though, along with some clinical hours spent working with a mentor. Some local colleges have the certification classes available. If you find you really like it you can return to school and get your degree.
People that have beat the odds make the best counselors… Good for you, and good luck! There are so many out there who need help.
I dont know if it helps, but I have been through addiction programs and ALL of my therapists and counselors were recovering addicts. You can be whatever you want to be and yes there is some certification needed. Why don’t you call a treatment center and tell them you intentions and see if there is anyone that can talk with you about the line of work? Experience isn’t enough here, but the experience helps you tremendously to get through all the classes.
experience helps…….a lot,,,,,,coz you have been through it all
i cant see any problem you getting a job……
