I have a friend that just turned 18 today and I really like him. We are friends, I wouldn’t say bffs, but he came to my house the other day to watch movies with some mutual friends and we IM/fb/text on a daily basis. I am younger than him so I think that might be why our relationship can’t advance to the next level. Anyways, he just turned 18 today and he bough himself a box of cigarettes. I am aware that he smokes (marijuana as well) socially at parties and stuff. I am not big on the party scene because I dont want to get pressured to drink or smoke (my reason is because I don’t want to do bad in school and I would loose my parents trust if they found out…lame excuse right?)
My problem is that not necessarily just him but a lot of my peers and friends do that stuff and I got a wake up call that I am going to be exposed to it and I can’t avoid those situations just by not going to parties. I want to continue being friends with this guy and I don’t think he would expect me to smoke, drink, and what not but I want to know some excuses when the time comes if I am offered something. I have already had the experience of going to a social event and offered a beer and I said ” I have somewhere to be after this ” and that seemed to work but what about cigs? should I say a medical excuses? Any personal tricks that you use?
*you may say like “don’t surround yourself with these people” or “it’s all peer pressure” and “they aren’t your friends if they want you to do this”
the fact of the matter is that I go to a small school (only 100 kids in the whole HS) I would say 80% do that stuff. I have my best friends who all agree with me and are against stuff but, I don’t know a guy who doesn’t :(
** the whole reason I told you about the 18 year old is because it isn’t illegal for him and I wanted you to understand that I have a friendship with these people and I can’t just drop them
