Prescription Addiction Radio Show Asks Governor Crist for Better Drug Bill to Stop OxyContin Distribution

Tampa, FL (PRWEB) June 12, 2009

The Drug Monitoring Bill awaits Florida Governor Crist’s signature or veto. The Prescription Addiction Radio Show – Breaking the Silence announced today that they are requesting Governor Charlie Crist, candidate for the U.S. Senate, to veto the present Drug Monitoring Bill before him.

Bill Janes, the Florida Drug Czar, has been vocal for many years on the needs for a monitoring Bill, but Larry Golbom, host of the radio show, claims that legislators have been mislead in their zeal to finally get a Bill passed. “The present Bill before our Governor will be ineffective and the diversion and deaths from prescription drugs in our state will continue,” states Golbom. “The 15 day waiting period for reporting a prescription and the lack of verification for proof of an ID is inadequate. The rules for the process of diverting prescription drugs will have simply changed. Bill Janes and members of our legislature are aware that technology exists that would put a greater detriment to diversion.”

The Prescription Addiction Radio Show reports weekly that the production from the drug companies and deaths from the prescription drugs continue to increase and has made the point that existing drug data bases in other states are apparently not working. The host of the show and a registered pharmacist for more than 30 years, Golbom insists “Florida has a chance to lead the nation and create an effective Bill. An effective Bill includes ‘real time reporting’ and the inability to present a fake ID to a doctor or pharmacist.”

Larry Golbom, host of the radio show, thought it strange that a registered Purdue Pharma lobbyist was at a meeting Golbom attended at St. Petersburg College that Bill Janes hosted in January. Golbom is now asking “Why was a drug bill that couldn’t make it out of legislative committees for many years suddenly overwhelmingly passed by our legislators this year? Did Purdue Pharma, the makers of Oxycontin, influence our legislators?”

Golbom sees The Monitoring Drug Data Base Bill representing a defining moment for Charlie Crist. “As the Republicans continue to lose voters because of ‘corruption in politics’, if another person dies because an OxyContin prescription was obtained because of an ineffective reporting system that Crist supported, while knowing that a real time reporting and biometrics system is available, the Radio Show will remind its listeners.” The radio show is requesting that Charlie Crist stand up for the families in our state and not succumb to the silence of a drug company that has already been convicted in Federal Court. (Case No. 1:07CR00029, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA v. THE PURDUE FREDERICK COMPANY, INC., ET AL., UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT FOR THE WESTERN DISTRICT OF VIRGINIA ABINGDON DIVISION)

According to the NY Times in a revealing article written in 2007, Rudy Giuliani defended Purdue Pharma in the past (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/28/us/politics/28oxycontin.html?pagewanted=all). It is Golbom’s contention that if Charlie Crist signs off on the present Drug Data Base Bill as written, his political future will follow Giuliani’s. He believes that the voters of Florida want a State Senator who will bring a record of protecting the people of Florida.
