Trending: How Much Does Happiness Cost in America?

Denver, CO (PRWEB) September 14, 2010

Happiness is probably the most elusive element in life that people seek. Achieving success, building wealth, or fulfilling desires is easy compared to finding happiness.

Think of all the rich, famous, and successful people who seem to “have it all,” yet who aren’t happy. They’ve experienced drug or alcohol addiction, depression, broken relationships, eating disorders, and in the extreme, suicide. If happiness equals fame, success, wealth or power, then every person who had them would be happy, but we know this isn’t the case.

A recent article in TIME Magazine reported a groundbreaking happiness study done by Princeton University. The study determined that in America an annual salary of ,000 is the salary/happiness threshold.

The more money a person makes, the happier they feel, but any amount of money earned over ,000 ceases to increase reported happiness. In other words, people connect the quality of their lives more with how much money they make than the degree of happiness they feel.

That may sound like a paradox unless you are someone who studies happiness, but Dr. Hurst Peacock, a Concept-Therapy practitioner and happiness expert, says it mirrors not only what researchers now know about being happy, but also what myths people are commonly taught about happiness and life.

“Society does teach us several life myths that explain exactly why a person might feel relatively happy day to day, yet only considers his or her life to be successful if certain external conditions apply,” says Dr. Hurst.

Happiness Myths

According to Dr. Hurst, who is the author of “Love Is a Hammer” which explores the power of love, healing and happiness, “people are taught that external conditions are more important than our internal environment. We give way more validity to objective information than we do subjective information, and we’ve extended that emphasis so far that people have become completely disconnected with their own experiences.”

“We are part of a society that values competition and winning,” says Dr. Hurst, “and money is how we keep score. We are also very confused about happiness. We are actively taught to confuse it with pleasure, which is certainly more available with more money at one’s disposal.”

In fact, says Dr. Hurst, that’s exactly why so much confusion exists–true happiness can’t be bought, but pleasure can. Satisfying a desire will indeed bring pleasure, but research indicates that it has little to no effect on long-term happiness. Once people acclimate to desire, satisfaction is like a drug – it takes larger and larger doses to achieve the same temporary high. And there is no such thing as enough.

Happiness is a Science

The good news is that Happiness is quickly becoming an exact science. Doctors know far more about how people can experience happiness now than ever before, thanks to breakthrough research conducted as part of the “positive psychology” movement of the past decade.

Dr. Hurst is also part of this movement, which he calls The Happiness Revolution, and has developed events and programs to help people dispel happiness myths and learn how to experience more and more of it.

Recent happiness research shows that people who report higher levels of happiness are more effective at achieving goals. They have an easier time reaching desired levels of success, make more money, and have longer lasting, more successful relationships. And this is the aim of Dr. Hurst’s upcoming event, The Happiness Revolution being held in Glendale, Colorado on October 30th and 31st, 2010 – to help people find their happiness.

Happiness is about being rather than doing and the interactive event aims to help participants;

Learn the 5 Big Secrets of Happiness
Learn how to experience more happiness
    Reduce stress and anxiety
Learn that life happens NOW, not yesterday or tomorrow
Learn how to “happily pursue” rather than “pursuing happiness”
Learn how to improve love relationships
Learn why love is a hammer
