What’s Up With All These Stereotypes About Teenagers That Are Coming From Adult Health Websites?

Question by Joe: What’s up with all these stereotypes about teenagers that are coming from adult health websites?
Holy crap, don’t even get me started on this topic. Honestly though, think about it for a second. They’re saying stuff like “10 ways to prevent your teen from using drugs” or “8 ways to resolve arguing with your teen” and even “5 ways to cope with your teenager”.

Is this what all adults think about when someone mentions the word “teenager” to them?

I’m turning 16 this coming August and i’m not your average teenager. To describe myself bluntly, I feel like an adult in a teen’s body. On my 6th grade NYS Reading and vocabulary exam It showed my reading comprehension level was that of an 11th grader.

I watch shows that most adults would watch (FOX news, TNT, FX movies, HBO). While most adults would expect us to be watching shows like MTV or VH1 or some “mind-numbing” program.

You also see stereotypes in movies in theatres. For instance, “17 again”. It showed a high school environment with the jocks and the geeks and the captain of the football/basketball team. Well in reality, it’s nothing like that.

It also seems like teens argue with their parents ALL THE TIME about things like “Why don’t I have any freedom OMG!!” or “Why can’t I stay up past 11:00?” blah…blah…blah. Give me a break. Adults have obviously been reading too much “Reader’s Digest”. I don’t know about you other teens out there, but I get along with my parents just fine. They divorced when I was 8 years old, but I got over it and learned to love my mom and dad and realize they are actually pretty cool people.

Also I’ve seen too many websites saying “Is your teen doing drugs/alcohol? Find out with this test!”. Wow, really? Give me a break. Not EVERY teen is going out every saturday getting stoned cold and “partyin’ till the mornin’s young”. Infact, most of us are home watching TV or surfing the web.

Speaking of the web, adults also seem to assume that teens barely have a sense of grammar (from articles online and in newspapers) and it has been destroyed by “txt-talk”. I don’t need to explain myself, just look a few paragraphs above. OMG!

Glad I got that out of my system! Just wanted you adults out there not to listen to those stereotypes the media is feeding you and just to realize that not EVERYBODY is the same.

What are your thoughts on all of this?
