Chapel Hill, NC (PRWEB) June 11, 2006
Rebecca Wells, PhD, MHSA, assistant professor in the Department of Health Policy and Administration at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has been selected as a 2006 recipient of the John D. Thompson Prize for Young Investigators by the Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA). The Prize recognizes young researchers based on their contributions to the research literature in the field of health services. Dr. Wells will be presented with the Prize at the 2006 AUPHA annual meeting this June in Seattle, Washington.
Previous winners of the Thompson Prize in the Department include Brian Weiner, PhD, and Shoou-Yih Daniel Lee, PhD.
“This award is well deserved,” said Peggy Leatt, PhD and chair of the Department. “Dr. Wells’s research is helping all us understand the impact of health delivery systems on vulnerable populations, especially children. We’re very proud and excited about the work she’s doing.”
Dr. Well’s current funded research focuses on factors affecting participation in community-based health promotion coalitions. She has also examined inter-agency cooperation in the contexts of community health centers, drug abuse treatment, and child welfare.
Prior to her appointment at UNC, Dr. Wells was an assistant professor of health policy and administration at Penn State University, where she was a member of the faculty since 1999. In addition, she was a Health Services Research & Development Predoctoral Fellow at the Veterans Health Administration in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and she was also a consultant and research associate for the Henry Ford Health Systems.
Wells received her PhD in health care organizational studies from the University of Michigan, where she also received her MHSA in health care management. She received her BA from Princeton University, majoring in public and international affairs.
The Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA) is a not-for-profit association of university-based education programs, faculty, practitioners, and provider organizations specializing in healthcare management and practice.
