St. Anthony’s on KRON 4 December 20, 2008
SAN FRANCISCO, CA December 18th, 2008 With December marking the highest one-week filing rate of unemployment claims in the last 26-years, and the temperature dropping daily, St. Anthonys is still stretching to meet the demand of those seeking food, warm clothing, and medical care. To help meet the need, St. Anthonys is preparing for its 21st anniversary of St. Anthonys Curbside Holiday Drive. St. Anthony Foundation staff and volunteers, wearing easily identifiable red jackets, will take delivery of food, clothing, and monetary donations at curbside, so donors wont even have to leave their cars. Donated items are distributed free of charge to San Franciscos most needy residents. Whether you drive a Lamborghini or a Toyota, donations are critical to meeting the need this holiday season. St. Anthony Foundations programs help heal individuals and families by providing a gateway for solutions to poverty, including a Dining Room which serves 2600 meals every day, a free Clothing and Housewares program, an Employment Program/ Technology Lab, Residential Drug and Alcohol Recovery Program, and a Free Medical Clinic. St. Anthony Dining Room has been serving free meals to the poor since 1950. Today, as the San Francisco unemployment rate soars to 12.5% and more people are in need of a hot meal, St. Anthonys continues to offer sustainably managed, healthy and filling meals 365 days a year at an average food preparation cost of 44 cents per serving. This conscious recipe of food reclamation and resource management, recycling and composting is essential to St. Anthonys everyday sustainability, and exemplifies a sustainability More than 75% of the 6000 pounds of food that is prepared and served each day to San Franciscos hungriest residents is reclaimed food, such as second-harvest fruits and vegetables or day old baked goods from bakeries, which would otherwise be thrown away.
