Food addiction is real. It involves being preoccupied with the pleasure that food will bring, yet no real satisfaction is ever experienced. Food addiction is actually quite the same as drug addiction, except for the fact that it is food that is being abused. Like drugs, food can cause terrible health problems if too much of it is consumed. People that experience food addiction often have something that is lacking within their lives. They feel as if they need food in order to be happy, and they look forward to eating in hopes that food will provide them with what it is that they are missing in their lives.

There are a lot of people that suffer from food addiction today. And what is so crazy is that not every one of them are overweight. You do not have to be overweight to have an eating problem. Some of the most attractive people are chronic smokers, drinkers, and illegal drug addicts. The face of addiction is very hard to identify, but the problem itself screams for help. Trying to achieve constant satisfaction is part of human nature. It is in our biological make up to want something to satisfy us constantly. It is our job to decide what is healthy and what is not.

Satisfaction is about obtaining a certain feeling, it is also about fulfilling a need in our lives that is not being met by something constructive. Several people who are depressed are especially prone toward food addiction because they sometimes do not know exactly what it is that they need, They think that food will give them a feeling of fulfillment and continue to eat even when the cycle begins to destroy their health. When you know what is making you unhappy in your current situation, you are able to kick your bad habits to the curb much easier. Food addiction can be combated through knowing what is making you unhappy. Ask yourself why you are searching for this constant temporary satisfaction.

Make a list of all of the areas of your life that you are unhappy with. Let’s say for example that you are really depressed because you just lost a close relative. The best way to solve something like this is by seeking a counselor and getting the necessary help for getting through the situation. We will say that another example might be that you are currently unsatisfied in your present relationship with your spouse, so instead of confronting the problem, you turn to food for temporary satisfaction. But what you really need to do is discuss your feelings with your spouse. But those are only a few examples, however.

Figure out some positive and productive solutions to your problems. Make sure that they are not destructive. Never replace one bad habit with another. Each time that you feel like you are about to overindulge, do something else. It may sound difficult, and it will be in the beginning, but turning your attention to something that will benefit you can help you to destroy your bad habits. An example would be to take a walk around the block each time that you experience a strong craving. Not only will that walk distract you, but it will also increase your energy, your mood, and it will also satisfy you. Look at each unnecessary craving as an opportunity for you to do something productive with your life. Before you know it, your cravings for food will turn into cravings for productivity and something that will benefit your life.
