How To Choose The Right Drug Rehab Center – 3 Quick Tips
We’ve all seen the headline before. Famous star or starlet (either at the demand of friends, family or in some cases the court of law) checks in to a drug rehab center.
Choosing an addiction treatment program is typically much easier for a celebrity than it is for average Joes and Jane’s. Usually money, location or program duration is either not an issue or is pre determined for public figures.
So for everyday individuals struggling with addiction, what are the key factors to consider when seeking a drug treatment facility?
Here are 3 quick things to consider.
1. Make Sure You Are Comfortable – Choosing a drug rehab center can be a daunting experience. Admitting to someone (who may be a stranger) that you are an addict can be intimidating. Make sure you are not only comfortable with the facility and its surroundings, but also (and perhaps more importantly) that you are comfortable with the staff. Having a TEAM of personable, compassionate and understating people to work with can make recovery much more attainable and enjoyable. Also make sure you and your family is comfortable with the cost. Recovery takes time, and often times can become really expensive. You don’t want to go into the recovery process with a negative cost stigma. This can add a level of stress and concern that is not healthy for individuals who are embarking on the road to recovery.
2. Evaluate the Rehab Center’s Track Record – Most centers have plenty of case studies and real testimonials available. In some cases ask around, a little networking may put you face to face (whether virtual or real) with someone who has undergone treatment at that facility. That person may have insight into their own experience while in treatment, and may also be able speak to how others in the program were treated. This positive or negative feedback could go a long way in helping you form your decision. Make sure the Center has one of 2 accreditations. The first is JCAHO, the Joint Commission on Accredited Health Organizations, and the next is Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). Certification by these organizations means the program has undergone site inspections and will ensure that the center meets national guidelines and standards for providing health services. Also ask to see the credentials of the staff, and whether or not they are licensed counselors (Masters Degree level preferred)
3. Is the Rehab Centers Methodology Right For You? Determine what kind of therapy will work best for you to overcome your addiction. Do you need group therapy, one on one therapy, or both? Do you require detoxification, an in house program or an out patient treatment plan? If this is your first rehab experience it may be ideal to choose a center that specializes in first time recovery. The needs are different. Some centers employ a holistic approach, one that examines every aspect of an individual’s life, while others place a strict emphasis and focus on the addiction. Choose the method that is right for you.
As we’ve all now heard a million times, admitting you have a drug addiction problem is the first step toward recovery. There are now a plethora of drug rehab centers throughout the United States to assist with addiction. Choosing the right treatment program is the first step on the journey to recovery.
