Alcohol Young People: ‘Necessary Evil’ Episode #08: Professor Nick Crofts – The Nossal Institute for Global Health

It seems that with the ever-worsening conditions in the Third World, marginalised communities in wealthy countries fade further into the distance as the narrow-minded people alongside them provide instruction on keeping quiet because “you don’t know how good you’ve got it!” Instead of applying the same ethical principles to all humans in every global setting, the misinformed and apathetic merely rationalise continuing injustice in countries like Australia using a harmful process of comparison. In specific relation to the ‘War on Drugs’, a global perspective is essential when attempting to come to terms with the anachronistic havoc that it represents – not only is the drug trade trans-national, but the ‘war’ has been declared and is waged against all people, regardless of colour, creed or race. However, it is fair to state that certain sections of the global community continue to suffer more than others and certain sections also participate in the incomprehensible exercise out of sheer desperation, as ordinary people seek to carve out some kind of reasonable existence in the face of unacceptable scarcity. In this week’s episode of ‘Necessary Evil’, a pioneering figure in the international harm reduction movement speaks of the importance of global development in the creation of sensible drug policy. The Obama administration may have chosen to discontinue the use of the term ‘War on Drugs’, but Professor Crofts reminds us that any other title is a plain exercise in euphemism
