These days, there is an increasing need for people who have an alcohol and drug counseling degree that can help the many people who are suffering from substance addictions. This type of work requires specific training and can be very challenging.

If you enjoy helping people and would like to counsel people with addictions, the first step is to find out the requirements relevant to the state in which you reside. Most states require some form of certification, which may be equivalent to an Associates degree. Some states require at least a bachelors degree in psychology, and in some cases a Masters degree.

Getting the correct certification will sometimes take a long time and will require a lot of hard work. There are, however, many jobs available in this field as the need for counsellors increases, and there are opportunities for working in a variety of settings such as hospitals, schools, collages, treatment centres and halfway houses, to name a few.

This is often very demanding work which requires not only good knowledge about substances of abuse, but also various other psychological problems which often go hand in hand with addiction. The work will also frequently involve working with teenagers and young adults, as this age group often has the highest rate of substance abuse and addiction.

Some of the problems that often occur in people who are addicted to drugs include mood disorders such as depression, anxiety disorders, family and relationship problems, and involvement in crime. One should be prepared to deal with issues such as these, as well as a variety of others, when attempting to counsel people suffering from addiction.

There are a lot of skills that one needs to be a good counsellor in general. These include a good sense of empathy and being able to understand another persons frame of reference. One should also be a good listener, should be able to pick up on and reflect feelings, and should not be judgemental.

When dealing with addicts in particular, it is important to realize that the rate of relapse among most addicts is very high. Do not put too much pressure on yourself if you are going into this field. Do your best for each client, but try not to be too disappointed if the person end up going back to drugs or alcohol. If an addict is not ready to make certain changes in his or her life, there is little that anyone else can do to force them.

On the whole, even making small changes in the lives of people who are addicted to substances of any kind will be very rewarding. It takes determination and patience to work in this field, but people who are trained to counsel in this way make a valuable contribution to society and are greatly needed. There are many people of a variety of ages who are trapped in a life of addiction for many different reasons, and they need help from a number of different people to make a fresh start in their lives.

An alcohol and drug counseling diploma opens up many opportunities for a career in the field. When you obtain an alcohol and drug counseling degree, you are equipped to work with addiction programs.
