I Am a Dual Diagnosis Member of AA. I Have 8 Years Sobriety. I Mentioned in a Recent Meeting?

that I was also bi-polar. You would have thought I said I had STD. There was some very hurtful statements afterwards, and I am SURE they were aimed at me. Most said “When I got sober, I did not have depression any more.” My feelings were hurt. I thought every AA member knew about a dual diagnosis. Needless to say, I left the meeting in tears. I really do not want to go back. If I do, go back, should I try and explain? I am fighting very hard not to let this be a trigger. My heart is broken. Are there any DD people out there?

How would you folks handle this? I do not know what to do!!

Wow I am absolutely shocked by the callus remarks you faced. Was your sponsor supportive? I suggest you him/her – let her know your feelings (rejection from the group/wanting to drink) and get the support your sponsor can give. I have not been to AA, though I have been to another anonymous meeting and there were many people with double diagnosis.

Is there another AA meeting you can attend, a different night or location? Maybe that will help.

Good luck.

PS. I know another 12-step called “Emotions Anonymous” which was very active at the hospital when I was there a few years back. That one didn’t really appeal to me, but it might be another source of strength for you.
