Andrew: The most important thing that I learned here was what I needed to do with the tools they were giving me to maintain my sobriety. I came in having gone to some twelve step meetings beforehand, but I didn’t understand them; I didn’t like them. What I learned here was how to get what I needed out of them. EDUCATION CURRICULUM Jen: In the first twenty-eight days of treatment, it really is an introduction to recovery. We teach a different class every single day for the entire twenty-eight days of treatment so there isn’t any repetition. We do a lot of education about the components of the disease, denial, anger, resistance. We talk a lot about spirituality and health. We also stress the importance of how one’s thoughts influence one’s behavior. Our extended care program sets us apart from a lot of other treatment programs where if you stay twenty-eight days you get a standard curriculum, and if you stay ninety days you repeat that same twenty-eight day curriculum. At Duffy’s, however, we have a separate curriculum for our extended care guests. People staying longer than sixty days are in their own small, focused, educational group. We really begin to look at the drivers of the disease. Nick: Coming here and learning the life skills that I learned in the counseling at Duffy’s and getting involved in the twelve step program are both things that have completely changed me.
