I’ve a Friend That Is Seeking Counseling…?

Question by Simbha: I’ve a friend that is seeking counseling…?
She is going through her medical insurance and as such must search for a practitioner on her insurance co’s website. She’s having trouble applying the right filters to her search. Could you please provide some terms that would be appropriate?

Just to clarify, she’s been going through some rough times lately, is unemployed and feels like her life is going somewhat downhill. I’m trying to be the best friend I can be (as are others) but she’s cognizant of the notion that professional guidance could be useful so she’s seeking some counseling. She says she’d rather see a counselor of some sort – she doesn’t feel she needs any drugs or anything, just someone to help talk it out of her for now.

We thought that “clinical psychologist” might be the right term but we’re unsure. Could someone provide me with a short list of the right “specialties” and maybe a brief description so she can choose the right ones?

Thanks ahead of time.
