Advice from a pharmacist to a new intern. What do you think?
“as I mentioned already you have about 15 seconds to “counsel” someone. You have to dumb it down for retail as the old saying goes. Not because the Pharmacist is dumb because the patients are dumb, rude, inconsiderate, self centered morons. You really only have time tell them three things. What the medications is for, what is the major side effect if any and if they need to take it with food. Anything beyond that is wasted breath on your part. Even simple information like this is over most patients heads and about 50% will call you later and ask you to repeat it”
“Pray you don’t actually have to educate someone on thier medication. Or god forbid you have to explain some abstract concept like why you can use Prevaid over the counter instead of the $ 368 prescription of Dexilant for the heart burn you get once a month. The kiss of death is a newly diagnosed patient with diabetes. Good lord that could take of 15 minutes or more of your time. Doing all of this will mess up your metrics. It will slow the mill down and we can’t have that!! After all its all about the metrics baby!!!! Keep that wait time under 20 minutes, the ready rate above 95%, ask everyone to sign up for auto refill, make sure the performace board is updated…..the important stuff.
My advice is to keep your head down. Occasionally mutter something incomprehesable and fake some sort of facial tick. Mess your hair up a little and look at everyone who bothers you like they are speaking chinese. This way everyone will leave you alone and you can focus on whats really important….managing the metrics! ”
