I Have Chem. Imbalance and Mental Disorders. This Line Isn’t Long Enough Look Below.?

Question by ProfessorAndrew: I have chem. imbalance and mental disorders. This line isn’t long enough look below.?
I’ve been asking people for advise about some of my issues and I am shocked to find out how few people know anything about mental health problems and I think some people don’t believe that they exist. As if its all in my head. Well yeah it is all in my head because my damn neurotransmitters don’t seem to know what to do. I just feel worse knowing that most people can’t relate at all and sometimes they say “get over it”, “you’re lazy”, “self-centered” etc. There is always someone that comes through and understands and is kind, thank God for that. My rant is over, you can go home now.

We don’t really know enuf about the idea of “chemical imbalances”. It is used to make mental health suffers feel better because they can point to the “thing” that is ruining their life. All the sufferer knows is that something is definitely wrong and it’s not getting better.
Drugs for mental disorders have to go thru your digestive system before they get to your body. Our digestive systems are amazingly good at breaking everything down. Someday they will discover an injectable form of Prozac or Zoloft so you can get a more pure relief.
Most people are tempted to self-medicate with alcohol. It actually works for about 10 minutes Then it makes everything worse. But those 10 minutes continue to attract people with no other hope.

Yep, I’ve had that rant, too. The bigger irritation for me is knowing that neuroscience is finding more and more structural and physical changes in the brain associated with certain mental illnesses. The more that is learned, the more closely these illnesses look like Parkinson’s and other diseases classified as neurological disorders – you know, illnesses that no one simply says, ‘get over it.’
