I heard my mom talking to my dad last night, telling him that her brother has dual diagnosis. I was just wondering how grave that is.

Treating dual diagnosis is a complicated process because treating one disorder would not mean that the other will eventually go away. Intense medical treatment, and probably inpatient rehabilitation for months are probably what your uncle needs.
