A Question About Blame?

Question by Cinnibuns: A question about blame?
I’ve just finished reading an article about the Virginia Tech shootings, essentially blaming the school for the deaths of 32 people because the faculty and counselors “did not respond effectively” to signs that the shooter was mentally unstable. I see this happening a lot in the media: someone does something atrocious and the media blames his parents or his education or the lack thereof.

My question is: Why does this country seem so intent on making the villain a victim and blaming someone else for the criminal’s actions? Why can’t the media and the people just hold the person who committed the crime responsible and end it there?

The media survives because they draw our attention to their paper/radio program/cable tv show/etc. by saying things that are controversial.

An audience is formed when people tune in to anyone espousing even absurd viewpoints because people naturally want to hear what’s said next, either to agree or be shocked further.

We are a country addicted to our media.

It’s not about right and wrong and soft-selling the ‘true’ victimhood of the violent perpetrator which is just manipulation of the audience’s emotions. It’s about money for the media corporations.
