Waking Up on the Toilet
Therapist Presents Unique Approach to ‘Flushing Away’ Negative Experiences
SAN DIEGO — Today’s fast-paced world is not conducive to self healing. Experimenting with the concept of self discover in a public setting, author Aliya Fonseca, MA, offers a unique approach to healing in her new book, Waking Up on the Toilet: Real Experiences About Appreciating Real Life! (now available through AuthorHouse and other retailers).
Fonseca coined the term and the concept of “waking up on the toilet” after the death of her grandmother in 1991. Forced to face difficult experiences in her life, she realized that the only way to move beyond them was to “flush them down the toilet.” With the realization that many people felt the same way, Fonseca’s movement was born. She began mentally collecting stories from other people who felt they were “waking up on the toilet.”
Beginning in 2004, Fonseca and her team of five collected stories in schools, drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers, prisons, the Internet and other organizations. Combined with poetry, journaling, self-help exercises, positive affirmations and colorful examples of everyday life, these stories provided readers with a comforting reminder that they are not along. The book covers personal experiences on a broad array of problems and negative experiences, including family, social, emotional, financial, mental and physical challenges.
“Waking Up On The Toilet is a clinical tool,” Fonseca says. “It is an inspirational book with clinical exercises that can be implemented by a lay person or clinician for self development.”
Fonseca’s book has been compared to the Chicken Soup for the Soul series. “Aliya Fonseca has captured the true American spirit,” says Dr. Carrol Waymon, a contributing writer for the San Diego Union Tribune. “Waking Up on the Toilet’s contributing writer’s are only there to share what they’ve flushed down the toilet, no celebration of trivial accomplishments.”
Fonseca is the founder and CEO of Waking Up on the Toilet. She is a licensed marriage and family therapist with a specialty in substance abuse and mental health. She also serves a board member for the National Association of Alcohol and Drug Interventionist. Waking Up on the Toilet is her first book, but she is already compiling stories for future editions and also working on a novel related to the project.
