Babysitter and Marijuana?
Question by ashley: Babysitter and marijuana?
My aunt and uncle have had the same babysitter, Rachel, for three years for their two sons, aged 2 and 4. The boys both absolutely love her and there has never once been a single problem. The only time they’ve hired someone else was when she was unavailable.
Rachel is around my age (I’m 19, she’s 20) and is a fulltime (honor roll) student at Rutgers. She also works 30 hours a week as an assistant manager at a clothing store, rents her own apartment with parental assistance, and used to volunteer at an animal shelter until her school/work got too hectic. What I’m trying to say is that, for a 20 year old, she’s a fairly impressive person. She has one vice.
Rachel smokes weed. Not constantly, she treats it more like that glass of wine that many people have at night to unwind. She does not drive if she’s under the influence. She doesn’t smoke before or during class, work or babysitting. She really only smokes at night, when the day is done and she’s staying home. She doesn’t do any other drugs, including alcohol.
Recently, and (I think) unfortunately, Rachel was arrested for possesion of 1 gram of marijuana. It was being dropped off by her friend at her apartment. Of course, this got back around to my aunt and uncle, who freaked out. Understandably, I guess. But the way they reacted bothered me. They suddenly reacted like she had abused their kids and was nothing but a “filthy drug addict”.
I have my own personal opinions about marijuana and legalization, but this really isn’t the place for it. I’m fairly well acquainted with her and I asked her if she had ever watched the babies under the influence. She knows me well enough to know that even if she said she had, I wouldn’t have told on her – what’s done is done. She looked me straight in the eye and swore that she would never, ever do that. I definitely believe her. Its kinda sad that the boys have lost her – they both adored her.
My question is this – how would you react? If you discovered your babysitter smoked and you could hypothetically guarantee that they have never used it around your children, would you be angry? Would you not let them around your kids (sober, obviously)?
I just think they overreacted a little bit. She only smoked at home, at night, with no children.
