Can Psychotic, Violent Outbursts Be Prevented From Quiet Loners?
Question by : Can psychotic, violent outbursts be prevented from quiet loners?
I’m referring to tragic events such as the Virginia Tech Massacre, the Columbine High School shootings, and the recent Loughner Assassination attempt.
It is often too late to prevent such calamities since signs aren’t always noticed right away. Some mentally disturbed individuals have so much repressed anger from past incidences–being picked on as an adolescent, for instance–that when the moment finally comes to carry out a violent manifesto, intervention is often too late–as the case with the Virginia Tech Massacre.
It would be a violation of human rights to report someone for “appearing” odd in terms of personality traits. For instance, a person has the right to be a loner and rebel against companionship. Loners are often stereotypically misconceived as being dangerous, especially if them have the countenance of anger or perplexity.
Do you think mental health should be reinforced? If so, to what degree?
I would say that if an individual has lost touch of reality to a vast degree (schizophrenia), intervening mental health care should be mandatory.

All well and good in theory, but control and power issues come into play, here. Too many people start playing games and have those they know commited under the guise of mental health, when in fact, the issue is one of jealousy, rivalry, revenge, and all manner of things.
Plus, one size does not fit all. Just bcoz someone has schizo doesn’t make them a loner, psychotically deranged individual. See the movie The Soloist.
In part, such people have come about via our ‘boxing’ our selves in, cutting off from one another, and so on. As the Beatles sang: all the lonely people, where do they all belong?
I am a firm believer in the saying, it takes a village to raise a child.
