Children Should Avoid Drug Abuse

In recent decades, many people pay much attention to drug addiction of young people, which becomes a serious social problem in these days. The individual and the institution are making their efforts to solve this problem. In 2006, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime selected “drugs are not child’s play” as the theme of its international campaign, in an effort to increase public awareness of the destructive power of drugs and society’s responsibility to care for the well-being of children. The latest statistics indicate that 200 million people, or 5 per cent of the global population aged 15-64, have consumed illicit drugs at least once in the last 12 months. Children with poor self-control and discretion are more likely to become the victims.

The children of all ages are affected by drug abuse and trafficking. Street children, living in terrible conditions, are vulnerable. Boys and girls whose family members are buying or selling illicit substances are also likely to become the victim of drug. These kids are exposed not only to bad examples but also to violent behavior which is associated to drug abuse. At school, teenagers and peers may be pressuring kids to smoke cigarettes and drink alcohol at first, and then to try marihuana.

UNODC’s anti-drugs campaign urges adults to protect children. Parents, siblings and other family members should ensure a safe environment for children. They should help children realize the dangers associated with drug abuse. Teachers and social workers also play an important role in solving this problem. They can watch out for warning signs and take measures to address any drug-related problems. For example, teachers can provide kids with information on the health risks linked to drug abuse and also give them a forum to discuss the issue openly. Other individuals and organizations can and should also contribute to the protection of children. The media, non-governmental organizations and government institutions are among them.

Drug addiction of the young people is not an individual problem, but a serious social problem. Every member should make effort in fighting against it. As a member of the society, we should avoid illicit drug use; meanwhile, we should give our hand to people with drug addiction.
