The original Sparkle premiered in 1976 and cast Irene Cara, Lonette McKee and Dwan Smith in the roles as the singing sisters. This time the three sisters are played by Jordin Sparks, Carmen Ejogo and Tika Sumpter. They comprise a “girl” group in the 1960s and are the main focus of the film. The girls make it big but drug abuse and fighting between them tear the group apart. Whitney Houston gave a gripping performance as Emma, the matriarch of the family.
