How a Dual Diagnosis Treatment Center Can Provide Help for Substance Abuse

Addiction is when someone depends on a substance such as drugs or alcohol regularly and in large amounts. It is usually called substance abuse. A lot of cases of substance abuse are combined with mental and physical issues. There are, however, dual diagnosis treatment centers that cater to these issues.

The rehabilitation process for this problem is compounded by the fact that one is difficult to handle and two is very challenging. The idea, though, is that it depends on which of the two problems affect the addict. For example, if an addict is dealing with an eating disorder and alcoholism, then the person has to be treated separately because this is not the norm. However, if the addict is dealing with depression and drugs, then both problems can be treated simultaneously because one could be the cause of the other. In explaining this, it is already proven that a drug addict is someone who engages in isolation, which in turn, can cause depression.

Dual diagnosis treatment centers are equipped with qualified professionals to deal with most of these problems. These centers also have distinctive and proven diagnostic techniques for developing a treatment plan that suits the addict no matter what types of addiction they have.

There is no question that drugs and alcohol are serious substances to abuse. It is also no question that they both have mental and physical implications. A person’s life can be shattered by the abuse of drugs and alcohol. However, it can also be debilitating if they also suffer with a bipolar disorder in conjunction with their drug or alcohol abuse. There are many addicts who are depressed, hallucinate, have high blood pressure, schizophrenia and anxiety. Some doctors prescribe medication for these problems, which may be a risk for some addicts who will eventually abuse the prescription pills while abusing drugs or alcohol.

The physical effects of drugs or alcohol is apparent in the addict as they battle with liver and kidney disease. There are some extenuating circumstances where the person is also dealing with HIV AIDS due to infected needles during drug use.

Dual diagnosis treatment centers try to focus on analyzing the situation and making sure that the person is adequately treated. At the time of admission, the doctors evaluate the patient to find out their background, medical history, age, how severe the problem is and then they provide a solution that is most appropriate for the addict.

Detoxification is the treatment that most dual diagnosis treatment centers first use as soon as the person is admitted and goes through all the administrative process. Detox is mandatory and there are no options involved in this process. The toxins from the person’s body have to be removed immediately. After detox, the person gets involved in intense therapy sessions where they are interrogated by the therapist to find out details of their drug or alcohol abuse. They are given tools and resources to assist them when they finally complete the program so that they will be able to return to society with some type of normalcy.
