Anorexia is caused by a mental disorder, sometimes brought on by a stressful event. Or as in the case of my daughter, a desire to please her gymnastics coach and repair a rift between her dad and me. Her doc also said she was born with a hereditary gene that causes obsessive /compulsive behavior. This came from her dad’s side of the family–my father-in-law had it, my husband has it, and our youngest daughter has it. OCD people have the need to control others and themselves, not always in a healthy way. Coach told the girls they all had to lose weight. She was at age 16, 5’7″ and weighed 120 lbs. Eventually she weighed 98 lbs. She lived on apples and water. Wore baggy sweatshirts and jeans so as to hide her skinny body. She was hospitalized 3 times in 6 years, 3 months at a time. It was a long scary horrible time for our family and friends. She almost died twice.
A size 0 jeans were too big. It took a lot of tough love and therapy to get her healthy again.

Bulimia is when a person eats the normal amount of food or binges and eats too much, then forces themself to vomit it all up again before the body has had time to digest it. It’s a way of controling your weight, but causes burning of the esophagus lining, and mouth tissues.

Both are addictive, because it’s a way a person can take control of their own life. Sometimes gives the person a feeling of euphoria, a high.

You don’t just “plan” on getting anorexic. It’s not the act of starving/throwing up food, it’s a mental illness that makes you to do these things.
Anorexia Nervosa is often caused by general traumatic events, prolonged abuse, perfectionism, extreme dieting, drug abuse etc..
