I am certain that it depends upon the person. We all have different chemistries and different personalties. If you need them for pain that is one thing, but never take medication for entertainment.
If your in pain, they are just to keep you feeling well. I have been on pain meds now for over 3 years. I would be in pain but can stop them without any addiction problem. I have been on it 3 to 4 a day since I began.

OXYCONTIN
Yes this is a highly addictive substance, but if there is a valid reason for taking it, and you have prescription, talk to your doctor. Addiction varies with each person physically and mentally, so there is NOT one right answer to your simple question.
If you are taking this for a serious extremely painful condition, such as pinched nerve or disc, or cancer, don’t worry about “addiction”.
Strong medications are given for unbearable pain and sometimes the person develops a “tolerance” which means they need more of the med. However, being dependant on the med is not an issue for seriously/ terminally ill people if you don’t ABUSE it – that is if you do not take more than prescribed!
People with cancer or terminal disease should never have to worry about “addiction”. It’s only fair that they have some pain relief – and these people do get used to the side effects and are usually able to stay alert or at least do the amount of activity their physical condition allows.
If you are taking this illegally (including “borrowing” from friend or obtaining it without a valid prescription), then you are going to be addicted soon. With illegal/ recreational use, there’s the possibility of interaction with other meds (including antidepressants and seizure medications, plus some others) which can cause you to stop breathing.
The sister of my dear friend died accidentally when she took this drug (illegally obtained) with her other prescribed medications
