I Think It Is Appalling the Manner in Which Psychiatrists Promulgate the Notion That “depression” Is a Mental?
Question by Ms. Ann Thrope ^^: I think it is appalling the manner in which psychiatrists promulgate the notion that “depression” is a mental?
illness that needs to be medicated with drugs. I believe depression is a reaction to circumstances. It is the result of the past and one’s present thoughts and insights on life. Thoughts and insights that are perfectly valid. If we had an inability to feel depression this world would be an awful place. It is the root of our consciences. All of the advice that I have seen on how to deal with a depressed person, how to talk to them seems to be incredibly manipulative and insensitive. If something bad happens or life isn’t going well, depression occurs. Simple as. What is truly ABNORMAL is being happy and chirpy all the goddamn time no matter what happens. But it seems that psychiatrists due the multimillion dollar industry they run, manipulate things for their own interest. They tell a friend of a depressive to always maintain a happiness about themselves when dealing with the depressed person–that only leads to them feeling they are not understood or empathised with. They talk about how clingy and annoying the depressed person is.
The instructions given in dealing with a depressed person seem to be too general and manifold. They seem designed for only the most brutish and callous people who have no understanding of human emotion. They seem like the most contrived instructions you could think of and disregarding of the person who is suffering as a mere nuisance. Meanwhile, there are millions of people in the world who are very happy people, but who are also fundamentally BAD people and this is what we characterise as NORMAL? Depressed people are often deep, sensitive, very ethical people who actually care about the state of humanity and I find the whole psychiatric system condescending and a devils playground frankly. It leads to a very dangerous homogenous society as in Brave New World in which everyone was perfectly chirpy living on Soma for the sake of a capitalist production process that wants human beings to function smoothly for the sake of the economy. If you don’t, you are abnormal…Life reflecting art,no? Anyone agree?
Granted drugs may be needed but still, I criticise the industry at large
Nicholas I don’t think I said you should enjoy it. But I don’t think it is abnormal. I think the incessant striving for pleasure leads to a very vapid, shallow society that does not understand what “good character” is. Sometimes people understand things others never pay mind to
It doesn’t get to the heart of the issue. Whatever depressed your spirit in the first place is still there and potent
Cassandra I have experienced depression since i was 7 off and on for years–I know about depression
