In the last week several athletes and celebrities including household name Melanie Griffith have required residential treatment for psychiatric and / or addiction problems. NBA players Renaldo Balkman of the Denver Nuggets were arrested for suspicion of DUI & Michael Beasley of the Miami Heat has checked in to a Houston rehabilitation facility. It appears that Beasley was successfully intervened on and brought in for help with his teams’ assistance and support. Melanie Griffith entered a Utah drug rehab treatment center for an undisclosed mental health diagnosis, according to People Magazine this is her 3rd stint in a Drug Rehab in recent years. Adam Goldstein a/k/a D.J. AM died from what appears to be a drug related overdose. Michael Jackson’s recent drug overdose is still fresh on our minds and shocked the music industry with his death. The family was reported to attempt an intervention prior to his death.

Believe it or not, these celebrities all have something in common with one out of every eight Americans. NIDA (the National Institute for Drug Addiction) research recently found that one out of eight Americans has a significant problem with alcohol or drugs, with 40 percent of the group having a “dual diagnosis,” or “concurrent” mental/nervous disorders. NIDA also disclosed that while more than 23million people needed treatment for alcohol or drug use, less than 11% got specialty help. These celebrity’s stories can help reduce the outdated social stigma around addiction and mental health problems as well as help family members, friends, and employers understand that professional treatment of addiction can be as successful as treatment of other chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and asthma.

“The difference in these stories illustrates the need for earlier rather than later intervention. No one needs to “hit bottom” before they can get their lives back. In fact, hitting bottom is an outdated stereotype that is more often dangerous and even fatal,” explains Susan Rosovsky certified psychiatric and addiction interventionist.

Intervention today is about raising the bottom for all involved. The devastation to families while waiting and watching their loved ones life disintegrate cannot be fully measured, but NIDA research reflects drugs and alcohol are implicated in half of all divorces and separations; eighty percent of family members of alcohol abusers consider work and home life “impaired” due to alcohol; and families of alcoholics and alcohol abusers use 10 times more sick leave. The good news found by NIDA is that when alcoholism and drug abuse are treated as long term, chronic illnesses, success rates are comparable to those realized with other chronic health problems.
