Is It Fair to Treat the Mentally Ill for Dual Diagnosis on Psych Wards?

Question by onesickchick: is it fair to treat the mentally ill for dual diagnosis on psych wards?
if i’m depressed do i need treatment for a drug addition i don’t have. this is what’s done to save a buck or make a buck but does it help or hurt those who are only mentally ill?
I’m asking about the fact that weather or not you have a dual diagnosis you are treated for one anyway. This is done on 90+% of psych wards

You won’t get a dual diagnosis unless you ahve a substance abuse problem, and for the people that are both mentally ill { i hate that term.. but lack a better one } and addicted to something it helps them more than treating just one problem at a time. It lowers relapse rates for both problems and provides more complete treatment, Overall i think it helps. Dual diagnosis, generally doesn’t refer to things like being depressed and having an anxiety disorder but it’s often used in the same way .

I’m not sure that I understand the question that well. If someone is a dual diagnosis, then they need help with both problems: mental illness and drug addiction, since there is a component to both and both must be treated as such. But if someone is in a behavioral health unit for mental health issues only, then “treating” them for a drug addiction is counterproductive.
