Is There Such a Thing as an Addict Who Is Beyond Help?

Question by boinga28: Is there such a thing as an addict who is beyond help?
I know people who work to help addicts would say no, but someone I know has been an addict and alcoholic for years. He has been to rehab so many times and failed that he has run out of rehabs to go to. Is it possible that there is an addict so devoid of a conscience that he is beyond help?
What I mean by “devoid of conscience” is …he has a son that he has lied to and blown off for 7 years, he has stolen from and lied to every person who has ever tried to help him. The only thing he cares about is his drugs and alcohol. He literally does not care about anything else. I think a person needs to have some sort of what is right and wrong in order to hit rock bottom and get clean. How can an addict/alcoholic get clean if there is literally no bottom to hit?
