BODY:

Located just outside of Thousand Oaks, California, Recovery Advocates and The Lake House – a holistic, upscale and surprisingly affordable integrated drug rehab treatment center and sober living transitional home in the San Fernando Valley – recently announced their upcoming open house in honor of famous drummer Gregg “Coal” Thomas. With over 25 years of sobriety and service work, impacting the lives of thousands of alcoholics & addicts nationwide, Thomas continues to push forward in helping others recover from the disease of addiction even while, he himself struggles daily with the debilitating effects of Parkinson’s Disease.
As a managing staff member at the Lake House Sober Living Home – the transitional aftercare residence which is part of the Recovery Advocates Treatment Program – Thomas brings years of personal and professional experience to the Southern California recovery community. His post-music career boast staff positions at some of the nation’s most renowned addiction treatment centers, such as; Discovery Place in Georgia along with Milestones Ranch and Passages in Malibu, California. Face to face however, there stands a humble and loving man who will sooner help a struggling alcoholic or addict rather than seek the pity of others for his own declining medical condition.

His career in drumming spanned nearly 30 years and consisted of playing with iconic legends like; John Lennon, Janis Joplin, Leon Russell, The Byrds and others. The high-profile lifestyle brought fame, exhilaration, an unfettered life on the road and as so often seen, the emergence an addiction to drugs and alcohol that began innocently and ended with near fatal consequences. Traveling from state to state in an effort to escape the chains of addiction, commonly termed “doing a geographic” in the treatment industry, he soon learned that he would either face his addiction head-on or continue to experience the progressive consequences that would one day likely end in a horrible death. The day came on June 18th, 1985 while at his lowest point and under the influence of a drug cocktail that would more than sufficiently kill the normal person, with a shotgun in his mouth and a trigger that would miraculously – possibly divinely – manage to jam in a fraction of a second, that he would enter a new doorway in his life and remain sober from that day on.
In the words of Stuart Birnbaum, Founder & Executive Director of Recovery Advocates Addiction Treatment, “this open house is about Gregg “Coal” Thomas, the beloved and respected member of our recovery service, now battling Parkinson’s disease but still fighting on and being of service at the Lake House, which is why we are celebrating him along with his remarkable music career.”

The event will be held at The Lake House Sober Living on Thursday August 5, 2010 from 11am – 2pm and will include boat rides on Lake Sherwood directly from their shoreline property, along with sandwiches, ice cream, music and a celebration of life in sobriety.
