I never understood how it could be legal to show someone
smoking crack etc.

you see news stories all the time that show video footage or pictures of crimes happening. think of the news showing surveillance of a mugging. or car chase. lots of instances. why would it be illegal to show as they are not breaking the law, they are just documenting someone else doing that.
