What is its classification?
Rohypnol (flunitrazepam) is classified as a benzodiazepine. Other benzodiazepines (these are LEGAL) include Xanax (alprazolam), Ativan (lorazepam), Valium (diazepam), Rivotril/Klonopin (clonazepam), and Serax (oxazepam).

Rohypnol has anxiolytic (anti-anxiety), hypnotic (sleep inducing), anticonvulsant, muscle relaxant, amnesic, sedative, and anesthetic properties.

Medically Rohypnol is used as a hypnotic, anxiolytic, and in some cases as a premedication prior to surgery.

Please keep in mind that Rohypnol is a LEGAL prescription drug in dozens of countries including Australia, France, The UK, Ireland, Singapore, Norway, Sweden, South Africa, Greece, Japan, Mexico, and Germany. Dose availability varies between countries, most commonly it is made in 0.5, 1, and 2 mg tablets.

How is the drug most commonly used? (inhaled, injected, swallowed)
Rohypnol is most commonly taken orally (swallowing a pill) although it is sometimes crushed, used sublingually (placed under the tongue for for rapid absorption), and a small minority of users snort or inject the drug.

What are some statistics about the drug?
The average price for a pill in The US is $ 5 per tablet.
The states with the largest use of Rohypnol are Texas, Florida (especially Miami), California Arizona, and New Mexico.
Most of the Rohypnol in The US and other countries where it is illegal is smuggled from Mexico.
The largest Rohypnol seizure was of 57,000 tablets.

What are the side effects?
Most common:
Anxiolysis (similar to alcohol intoxication), tiredness, memory impairment, dizziness, headache, muscle weakness, disinhibition, increased talkativeness, freedom from psychological and social restraints on behaviour, “hangover” feeling in the morning, confusion, ataxia, dry mouth, and
slurred speech.

Rare side effects:
Delusions, hallucinations, nightmares, loss of memory/blackouts (anterograde amnesia), gastrointestinal disturbances, respiratory depression (extremely rare), hypotension (decreased blood pressure), reduction or elimination of delta wave (Stage N3) sleep, somnolence (typically from chronic use), paradoxical reactions including aggressive behaviour, sudden excitation or anxiety, rage, agitation, violence, suicidal ideation, suicide attempt, addiction, misuse, tolerance.

1/2 of long term users become physically dependent (this alone is NOT the same as addiction) and if the drug is abruptly stopped physical withdrawal will occur which includes symptoms like anxiety, panic attacks, photophobia (sensitivity to light), agitation, tremor, fever, hand and cold flashes, depression, rebound REM and delta wave sleep (increase in the amount of REM, delta sleep). In some cases withdrawal can lead to gran mal seizures, status epilepticus (constant state of seizure- potentially lethal), catatonia (potential lethal), delirium tremens, hallucinations, suicidal ideation, suicide attempt, suicide completion (ie successful attempt), homicidal ideation, violence, paranoia, psychosis, rage, coma, development of PTSD, panic disorder with or without agoraphobia, or other anxiety disorder.

What is the source? like does it come from a plant, seed, or something?
Rohypnol was developed by Swiss pharmaceutical giant F. Hoffmann–La Roche (Roche) in 1975. It is a synthetic substance.
