Melanie Solomon is the author of the book, “AA Not the Only Way,” which is in its 2nd Edition and an Amazon.com Bestseller, available at <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:_gaq.push([‘_trackPageview’, ‘/outgoing/article_exit_link’]);” href=”http://www.aanottheonlyway.com”>AA Not the Only Way</a>.
Ms. Solomon draws on her own personal and painful experiences with addictions and the life problems that arose from those addictions. After 12 long years of going in and out of AA, when she finally realized that the Alcoholics Anonymous approach did not work for her, she knew she was not alone, and that there had to be another way. Although A.A. obviously helped some people, others, like Ms. Solomon, were turned off by A.A.’s central philosophy of personal powerlessness, a required belief in a higher power, and the need to attend meetings for the rest of your life.
She has gone on to teach at the Huntington School District’s Drug and Alcohol Program, sharing with teenagers that there were alternatives to the 12-step program, as well as leading a workshop at The Learning Annex in California. Her book has also been used in court, to be used as evidence that there are, in fact, viable options, so that no client should ever be mandated to go to AA or a treatment program that is 12-step based. 16 states now rule that it is “unconstitutional” to force someone to go to AA because it is “unequivocally religious”. Ms. Solomon is an expert speaker and witness for AA Alternatives.
