What Can I Do About Psychiatric Abuse Within My History as a Minor?

Question by Paradox O: What can I do about psychiatric abuse within my history as a minor?
I have been a victim of abuse involving the constant conflicts I had with the mental health system over the years of 2004-2007. I was a minor (age 15 in 2004) when I had to see a therapist. Originally seeing the therapist due to the fact that I was having a hard time with peers in High School (I had become depressed), I was quickly told to see a psychiatrist. After that, I was misdiagnosed, though not entirely. At the age I was at, they could not “officially” diagnose me, but instead “treated” me as if I had “Schizophrenia Paranoid Type”. Soon, I found my self at the max dosage of an anti-psychotic known as Abilify, and at the psych ward many times over. I began to hear voices, and hallucinate violent images while on Abilify and other medications (including Geodon at the same time). Later, I was told I had “Schizoaffective Disorder”, so I was put on additional medication. At age 18 this year, I went off my medications. Hallucinations have left me, and I believe something should be done

Abilify is the devil! Everyone I know who was put on it was in hell the whole time. Psychiatrists were giving it because other anti-psychotics can cause severe liver damage and Abilify is supposed to better for your liver.

You are not alone in this! Many people have had similar experiences to yours and are working to ensure something is done.
What country are you in? If you are in New Zealand, you could report your adverse drug reaction to a place called CARM that monitors (not surprisingly) adverse drug reactions. Some other countries have similar organisations.

Drugs made me worse instead of better too, and I created a website to help ensure that people who this happen to are not isolated.

It supports the work of a really great organisation called Patients Rights Advocacy – they helped me get off the drugs seroquel and lithium safely.

Go to the links page, and you will find other organisations who are fighting for change. Mindfreedom is one of the good ones, there are others too.
Hope that helps – good on you for speaking out, because people need to know that psychiatric drugs hurt a lot of people more than they help them (to put it mildly).
