What Do You Think of This “philosophy”?

Question by Jimmy Hansen: What do you think of this “philosophy”?
I was baptized, but I then I realized I had some glaring problems with the Christian religion. I believe in God, but I believe that things work in more of a system, than “divine intervention”. Where would we be if God solved all our problems for us? I think he gives a hand if you ask him, but not every time. My theory is that God is a watchmaker, and we are the watch. Gears and cogs interact, shift, change, stop working, and new cogs are formed to keep the world “ticking”. God just gives things a little push, and they move on from there. Wikipedia the “Theory of Organized Chaos”or think of a “Circle of Life”, and that is a decent summary of what I think. I’m not sure if it is fate or chance, but I believe “God works in mysterious ways.” I also don’t think that people are saved or dammed just because of their religion. I think that people just “move on” to another plane of existence. People should do good things to help other people, not so that they don’t go to a horrible hellish place after they die. I do believe in “luck” though, that maybe even a positive attitude can change how you and the world interact. Jusk ask if you need any more clarification, because it’s really hard to write down what I believe in. I know there will be nay-sayers that tell me I’m wrong, but I promise I won’t discriminate against you. Maybe I’m just nuts. Thanks for listening.
I do think that God still answers your prayers. But God won’t just “give” you a new Mercedes. “God helps those who help themselves”. I believe that’s true.

Don’t worry, you make a lot of sense–as much as any religion =). One thing I would argue is that going along with your other beliefs, I’m not so sure about you saying that “I think [God] gives a hand if you ask him, but not every time.” It would seem more consistant to your other beliefs if you said that God made the watch, then moved on to another project (so to speak). So in that regard you would be agnostic, thinking that while God may have created us, there is no reason he would waste his time helping our every whims.

I’d be interested to hear more about your beliefs on what this next ‘plane of existence’ would be.

I completely agree about the foolishness of doing good just so that you will not go to Hell. If you have to be motivated by something like that, then you are not a very good person. The real good people are the ones who do good deeds, yet do not believe in Hell (or perhaps, God).

It would seem that your belief is something like God created the first spark (getting rid of any problems of abiogenesis), but then Evolution took over after that. If we were to talk about the history of life. Is that an accurate assumption?
