What I Learned in Utah Drug Rehab

Peer Bonding – One of the most important aspects as it turned out was the struggle my peers and I all had in common. Although we all came from different backgrounds and cultures, the battle with addiction created a bond and support system that we will all rely on in our recovery. I was reminded by the Utah drug rehab programof camps I went to as a kid and how we all didn’t want to be there but in the end created some of the more strong and healthy relationships I have.

Safe Environment – I know I felt safe within the confines of the drug rehab facility, what I didn’t know is how safe I would feel outside the walls of that safe haven. Utah had a way of keeping me in the moment, it just moves at a slower pace it seems. There was a sort of constant reminder to stop and smell the roses. Waking up and seeing the enormous mountain range and interacting with genuinely caring people was refreshingly humbling.

Therapeutic Activities – I can’t lie, if it wasn’t for some of the extra curricular activities in treatment I don’t think I would have made it through. I am glad my treatment team saw the need to integrate so many options for recreation into my therapy. It was crucial in keeping me vested and passionate about my recovery. Many times I was so focused on the task or activity at hand that I did not realize some of the therapy being given and skills I was learning. Through out life I have been unable to count on others, while rock climbing or river rafting I learned to count on my peers to do their job so that we all remain safe. I now know I will be able to count on them throughout my recovery. I am so appreciative in completing drug rehab in Utah and having access to that outdoor environment and all the sports and activities it provides a platform for.
