What Should My Friend Do With Her Divorce Situation?

Question by Yoyoyam: What should my friend do with her divorce situation?
A very good friend of mine is getting ready to file for disolution of marriage in ohio to her husband that has become a drug addict and has been abusive. She is wanting to simply ask for nothing to end it quickly but I think this is out of fear. She has 2 kids from another marriage but is now living with her sister making next to nothing and her husband was making almost 100k a year. The problem I have is that her credit is now ruined because he is under her medical coverage and he has not paid his medical bills and from a few other financial blunders the guy has made. What can she do to get her credit on track and even get compensated for this crap? She does not have much money at all to get an attorney unfortunately and he is threatening to not sign off on the dissolution if he has to pay anything which would force her to get an attorney which he knows she cannot…

The best thing she can do is get a free consultation with a divorce attorney who will know the laws in her state. Any attorney worth his weight will offer a free one-time consultation. As far as why she wants nothing from him, that’s up to her. My fiancee wanted nothing from her ex-husband because she wanted it over and done with ASAP. It was not out of fear. She just didn’t want anything. This may be her reason as well. If you are concerned that she is afraid of something, try talking to her. It’s a sensitive issue; so if she doesn’t want to talk, let it go but suggest that your door is always open. The attorney with whom she gets the consultation should be able to direct her to a credit counseling program (not to be confused with the credit “counselors” who will try to resolve your debt with the banks). Hope that helps.
