Why Don’t People Take Self Mutilation Seriously as an Addiction?

Question by I ? TM: Why don’t people take self mutilation seriously as an addiction?
A friend and I were talking about addictions last night and I told him that I self mutilate, he said “Oh, well that’s not that serious, it’s not like you do heroine or drink alcohol.”

I don’t think he meant to offend me, but he did. Why wouldn’t someone take something like cutting/burning seriously?
