New Study Reveals 82% of Male Addict Convicts Released From Prison Are Homeless

New York, NY (PRWEB) December 17, 2010

According to recovering addict Jeffrey Christian, founder of executive search firm CTPartners and The Number 12 Foundation, 82% of male addict convicts released from prison are homeless. “In Cleveland, Ohio, for example, there are currently 10 addicted convicts on the street for a single bed available in a safe, sober house. This overwhelming need simply cannot be accommodated,” he said.

Results are based upon the study of ex-convicts graduating from the Number 12 Prison Program and reentering society. The study was conducted over the past 12 months as Christian followed the lives of 100 convicts suffering from the disease of alcoholism and addiction. Christian was incarcerated in Marion County, Ohio from 2007 to 2008.

According to Christian, “When more than eight out of ten male addict convicts are released from prison, they have no home. As a result, they end up in a city mission, but they can only stay there at night. It leaves them out on the street during the day where they become angry, resentful – and in these months, cold. For most, it leads to instant relapse. Only those 18% who can go home actually have a chance,” he said.

According to Jeff Christian, one of the main problems in addition to homelessness, is that ex-convicts suffer from a lack of community that can make a significant difference in their ability to stay clean and sober.

Christian said that there is a need for real daytime, back-into-life transition programs for the released male addict convict. “At the heart of such a program must be a consistent 12-step recovery program. These convicts need sponsors in and out of prison – and they need daytime/nighttime support groups.
